Kings' Jonathan Quick turns away Devils through two periods

NEWARK, N.J. â€" Jonathan Quick continues to baffle the New Jersey Devils.

The Kings’ goaltender turned away 20 shots through two periods, preserving a 1-0 lead in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday evening at the Prudential Center.

Shots were at a premium in Game 1. They came wholesale Saturday. The Devils, who had only 17 shots Wednesday in the series opener, had 17 with four minutes left in the second period of Game 2.

Quick was up to the challenge.

He deflected away Devils center Jacob Josefson's redirect five minutes into the second period. He even made a skate save on a wicked ricochet off Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi.

New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur nearly matched Quick save for save. He denied Justin Williams on a two-on-one rush early in the second period. He gloved a quality shot by Colin Fraser 12 minutes into the period. Brodeur smothered a one-timer by Mike Richards with a little more than a minute left in the period.

But Brodeur didn’t always get support from teammates. While the Devils were determined to get traffic in front of Quick, they gave Kings’ defenseman Drew Doughty a free path in the first period.

Doughty picked up the puck at center ice and skated past two New Jersey players. He then sent a shot through defenseman Bryce Salvador and past Brodeur for a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game.
