It looks like Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich operating system is finally warming up in the smartphone market. Ice Cream Sandwich is now on one out of 10 active Android devices, according to data the company released Tuesday.
This comes on the heels of Google’s announcement last week of the details of its upcoming Jelly Bean software. The slow growth of Ice Cream Sandwich does not bode well for the adoption of a brand-new operating system.
Google said Ice Cream Sandwich now accounts for 10.9% of the Android market, according to the data, which counts up to July 2. This is compared with Ice Cream Sandwich’s 7.1% share one month ago.
It took over eight months for Ice Cream Sandwich to break the 10% mark.
Meanwhile, the Gingerbread system is still holdi ng on to the lion’s share. Almost two thirds of active Android devices use Gingerbread, though its share has declined slightly from last month.
Despite its growth, Ice Cream Sandwich is also being beaten handily by the over-2-years-old Froyo, on which 17.3% of devices still operate. Earlier systems Cupcake, Donut and Eclair, held marginal portions of the market.
Fragmentation is still an issue even as Google continues to gain market share in the smartphone industry, and with Jelly Bean around the corner, that problem’s not going away anytime soon.
