Film Independent at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art kicks off its monthlong âFrench Film Fridaysâ at the Leo S. Bing Theater with a double bill of Jean-Luc Godardâs 1963 âContemptâ with Jack Palance, Brigitte Bardot and Fritz Lang as himself, and Francois Truffautâs Hitchcockian 1969 âMississippi Mermaid,â with Catherine Deneuve and Jean-Paul Belmondo. www.lacma.org

The American Cinemathequeâs âMayan Calendar Countdownâ series features two version of Richard Mathesonâs âI Am Legendâ on Thursday evening at the Egyptian Theatre: 1971âs âThe Omega Manâ with Charlton Heston and 1964âs âThe Last Man on Earth,â with Vincent Price. On Saturday, the Egyptian hosts the 2012 Viscerea Film Festival, which features horror shorts, the feature âAmong Friendsâ and a tribute to Mary Lambert, who directed âPet Sematary.â Sundayâs offerings are two films starring Lea Thompson: 1987âs âSome Kind of Wonderful,â penned by John Hughes and directed by Howard Deutsch, who married Thompson, and 1983's âAll the Right Moves,â one of Tom Cruiseâs early hits. UCLA Film Television Archiveâs latest series, âThe Films and Legacy of Antonio Reis and Margarida Cordeiro,â celebrates the artistry of the Portuguese director Reis and his psychologist wife Cordiero, who directed the four films with her husband. The series begins Friday at the Billy Wilder Theater with 1976âs âTras-os-Montes,â with 1985âs âAnaâ set for Saturday. Two early Ernst Lubitsch talkies, restored by the UCLA Film Television Archive, are on tap for Sunday afternoon at the Wilder. Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald in her film debut headline Lubitschâs witty 1929 musical, âThe Love Parade.â The second bill is Lubitsch's third sound feature, 1931âs pre-code comedy âThe Smiling Lieutenant,â with Chevalier, Claudette Colbert and Miriam Hopkins. www.cinema.ucla.edu
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciencesâ s ummer screening series âThe Last 70mm Film Festival,â commences Monday at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater with Stanley Kramerâs 1963 comedy epic, âItâs a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World,â starring Spencer Tracy and practically every comedian in Hollywood at the time. Several cast members will be on hand for a pre-screening discussion, including Jonathan Winters, Mickey Rooney and Barrie Chase. The academyâs Oscars Outdoors series in Hollywood continues Friday evening with John Fordâs 1939 masterwork, âStagecoach,â which took a young John Wayne out of B movies and made him a major star. Eddie Murphyâs 1996 version of Jerry Lewisâ 1963 classic âThe Nutty Professorâ screens Saturday evening with guests that include co-producer James D. Brubaker, makeup artist Rick Baker, writer Barry Blaustein and editor Don Zimmerman. www.oscars.org
